The EPA recently approved the Snap Sampler for groundwater monitoring at a high-profile Superfund site on Long Island, New York.  EPA Region 2 and its contractor selected and specified the Snap Sampler for monitoring a large and dilute TCE plume associated with historical industrial activities in a location highly susceptible to drinking water impacts.

The Snap Sampler method met the needs of EPA through its unique combination of:

      • high data quality
      • ease of use
      • avoidance of investigation derived waste (IDW) and
      • cost savings

While a site approval is not blanket approval everywhere at any time, EPA approval at this site is an important precedent.  EPA does not provide blanket approvals for equipment, so selection based on the merits identified above indicates the method is a preferred approach in an urban setting where IDW handling and cost are important, and where high data quality for VOC recovery at low concentrations is essential.
